Barron's Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds
adore this book! I am a total dog nerd, and am always thirsting
after the most complete and informative guide to selecting the breed
for you, and this book is it!!! I feel so strongly about this book
that I have even bought it for or lent it to family and friends that
are contemplating owning any kind of dog. The pictures are lovely,
the history is interesting, but the most important part of this book
is the rating key that the author has included. It rates each AKC
registered breed on a scale of 1 to 5 on maintenance, health, pet/human
compatibility, and several other need to know categories. It shows
each breed's popularity in the US by ranking it on how many new dog
ownerships were registered when the author was compiling this book
before it's publication in 1997. It also gives a health synopsis
that tells you what to expect in terms of health problems and life
expectancy. I have bought and read several similar books since purchasing
this one, but every one of them has been a GREAT disappointment by
comparison. After you own this book, you'll never need another dog
breed encyclopedia or dictionary. If only the author would create
an addendum every 5 years or so to cover new breeds!

Dogs: The Ultimate Dictionary of over 1,000 Breeds
A respected naturalist and the author of over 50 volumes on animal
and human behavior, Morris has compiled a treasury of information
on the dog. More than 1000 breeds are discussed, accompanied by 600
black-and-white illustrations. Although the sheer number of dog breeds
cited would be sufficient to make this volume a highly recommended
purchase for all public libraries, Morris's painstaking scholarship
and research truly set the book apart from standard breed dictionaries.
Individual breed descriptions are followed by references provided
in chronological order. The book closes with lists of general breed
reference works, regional breed books arranged by country, and books
that examine breed groups. In addition to the scholarship and fluid
writing style, Morris includes fascinating anecdotes about extinct
dogs, edible dogs, recent crossbreeds, breed histories, alternate
names, and even a dog that will herd fish. All breeds are listed
in the index. A valuable book for serious dog enthusiasts and casual
browsers alike. Cleo Pappas, Lisle Lib. Dist., IL

The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World
This is absolutely the best reference book on dog breeds I have
ever seen. It is huge, containing over 900 pages. There is information
on every dog breed. Even extinct breeds are included accompanied
by drawings.
There is a least one photograph of each dog breed shown in full-color
on glossy stock. The more popular the breed, the more photos there
are of it. Most are large and several are in full-page format.
Information on each breed includes country of origin,
registry, group, colors, height/weight, other names & coat description.
A detailed history & their personality traits are also included.
This is the book to get if you want a great way to
learn about rare & seldom
seen breeds. The unusual appearance of some the dogs is fascinating. |
